Safety Harbor Boat Club
Meeting Minutes
November 1, 2006

Officers present: Mike Penley, Commodore; Frank Fitzhenry, Treasurer, Barry Fox, Secretary

Meeting called to order by Commodore Mike Penley @ 18:30, everyone was welcomed.

Guests: Safety Harbor residents Nancy and Tim Hill were welcomed back as well as Andrea Norwood and Matt Spoor with the Safety Harbor Recreation Department.

Vice Commodore's Report: Mike reported that he had been in touch with Chris G. who was still in New York and should be back in the area in mid-November.

Treasurers Report: Frank F. reported no new monies were received, he had paid the postmaster for the post office box leaving a balance of $1327. Recommended collecting dues at the Christmas Party.

Commodore's Report: Mike thanked all the officers for helping out the last two years. Agenda items for this meeting include Christmas Boat Parade, Christmas Party discussions, Marina Re-work update from Matt, and Officer Elections.

Christmas Parade, Dec 16 - The parade starts at 13:00 with line up at noon. Chris G. may not be back in town by then to make his boat, John B, available. It was suggested that Mike Denny's small boat, Ethan's Boat, could be good substitute. Andrea said the parade theme this year was "Let Freedom Ring."

Christmas Party, Dec 6th - Sam Seltzer's, US 19, Clearwater @ 19:00. Boat Club member and spouse/significant other get the member rate, $10.00 each. Guests may be brought @ $15.00 per guest. Motion made for donations and toys to go to Toys For Tots, motioned seconded and passed. Toys, cash or gift cards may be donated but cash is easier to handle, transport, and donate. Dick G. said he would provide DVDs for sale of boat trips taken and the power plant implosion with proceeds going to Toys For Tots.

Marina Construction Update: Matt S. reported the contract started 1 Nov but actual work would not actually commence until approx mid-month. A small number of temporary slips (5, 7 & 12) would be available on the front wall and would be offered via lottery. The boat ramp will be closed during the entire construction period. Dingies could probably be accommodated at the south end of the east sea wall, but a better spot would be the steps at Veterans Park.

A single aluminum ladder will be placed at the end of each finger pier. All stringers and all decking will be replaced along with many damaged pilings. There are contingency monies for replacing additional pilings and electrical equipment. A question was asked about replacement of all electrical boxes and wiring to which Matt stated there was contingency funding for electrical rework. Individual deck boxes will not be allowed however, a boat club box would be allowed on the central finger. Matt requested dimensions of the boat club deck box.

One member asked for an email copy of the scope of work, cleat backing plates/security was discussed, pilings would be placed back in their original position, stringers would be of a different size than the current design, recurring maintenance including decking treatment would be provided, the seawall would not be reworked but some pilings would be sistered to existing pilings to provide strength, Seaway Marine is the contractor, Matt was not sure if a completion bond was required from the contractor, piling caps would greatly extend the piling life-not sure if in the contract.

Mike P. passed out a sailing magazine article that covered corrosion and electrolysis. Further info can be found at: http://www.marinesurvey.com/yacht/corrosion_1.htm

Sail Expo is coming up and passes are available at West Marine or Buy 1 Get 1 Fee at SailExpo.com

Steve D. stated there were four boats signed up for Regatta Point Marina. If we can get eight boats then the five month deal would be honored.

Mike P. described the sail down to Regatta Point Marina the last weekend in October. The cold front that moved through Friday night provided exciting sailing both on Friday with strong southerly winds and on Saturday with strong northerly winds.

New Speed Record Set - Patrick W. set a new speed record in Hooligan, 17.2 mph!!

2007 SHBC Officer Elections: Mike P. stated no additional nominations were received since the last meeting so the slate stands as proposed:

Commodore - Mike Hembrey

Vice Commodore - Steve Doherty

Treasurer - Frank Fitzhenry

Secretary - Barry Fox

A motion was made to accept the slate of officers as proposed, seconded and all members voted aye.

With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 2000. Meeting attendance - 19.

Respectfully submitted,
Barry Fox, SHBC Secretary
